Audio Mastering/ Audio Post production
Audio mastering is typically the final stage of development for an audio project. After spending many hours in the studio, changing, improving, editing and refining. Audio mastering is that last step carried out by a third person that can make all the difference to the end result, having the advantage of a 'A fresh set of ears.'
Audio mastering is often confused with mixing, but the two are quite different: Mixing is balancing the levels between instruments and getting the individual instruments to sound good, where as mastering is a final touch and maximising of the sound volume. Commerically released CDs often sound much louder than your own mixes as they use compression and clever limiting techniques to maximise the levels, boosting the overall sound.
Ideal Preparation for the audio mastering process/ CD mastering
Before sending in your final audio for the mastering process, get the mix as good as you can get it. Spend a little extra time when doing the mixdown, as the correction of errors; although possible is difficult and expensive. Ideally review the material through quality speakers and cheap sound systems at different levels to be sure that the sound is balanced and the frequencies are not too boomy.
